A member of the Scottish National Party (SNP), he was Cabinet Secretary for Justice from 2007 until 2014. MacAskill studied law at the University of Edinburgh and worked as a solicitor and was a senior partner in an Edinburgh law firm, before being elected as an MSP in 1999. Following the SNP's victory in the 2007 Scottish Parliament Election, MacAskill was appointed as Cabinet Secretary for Justice in the Scottish Government. He left office in November 2014 in the Cabinet reshuffle which followed the appointment of Nicola Sturgeon as First Minister of Scotland. At the December 2019 general election, MacAskill was returned as MP for East Lothian, gaining the previously Labour-held seat from Martin Whitfield. (Bron: Wikipedia)
This look at the fascinating lives of a fraction of Scotland's expat community, explores how they feel their home country helped shape them, the motivations they had for moving away and the perspectives that distance has lent them of the land they left behind.
It would be hard to imagine a collection of people more diverse than those interviewed here, from a 24 year-old international women's footballer, to a world-renowned photographer famous for images of world leaders and iconic celebrities like the Beatles, to a retired Reverend. But a simple and powerful connection links them all: they are all Scots abroad.
